Meet the MD

DNASTREAM Newsletter Summer 2008 - Andy Milner

In between rushing to and from customer meetings, OnSTREAM managed to corner the DNASTREAM MD, Andy Milner, in his Guildford office to find out a bit more about what makes the company tick.

OS: Welcome Andy, and thank you for taking the time out to speak to OnSTREAM.  My apologies, but I’m going to put you on the spot straight away. There are many SAP services organisations in the market – why should customers choose DNASTREAM?

AM: Well, we formed DNASTREAM 18 months ago because we believed there was a general dissatisfaction with the outcome of many SAP projects. In short, customers were not getting the benefits they had originally expected when choosing an SAP solution for their business.

OS: Why was that?

AM: We saw two main reasons for this. One being a lack of experienced and knowledgeable consultants in key project positions and the other being project agendas that were not focused enough on meeting customer expectations.

OS: Okay and so back to my original question – why use DNASTREAM?

AM: DNASTREAM are a team of peer-recognised SAP specialists, who combine industry know-how, solution knowledge and pragmatic delivery expertise. Our experience of many SAP projects enables us to guide customers and partners to drive increased value from their SAP solutions.  We know what works and what doesn’t work and have seen that a small, select team of experts can deliver significant value to our customers’ projects. We are totally customer focused and our approach enables our customers to become self-reliant and manage continuous improvement with reduced external support.  We don’t believe there are any other organisations in the market that have these skills and principles.

OS: So does this mean you won’t work with other SAP consulting partners?

AM: No it doesn’t and in fact we work very well alongside a number of different partners in all of our customers. Our key value add in these situations is the expertise and knowledgeable approach we bring to the overall team, for example through a DNASTREAM Programme Manager.

OS: But don’t these high quality, experienced SAP Consultants come with a high price tag attached?

AM: There is obviously a premium for experience but we believe this is worth paying to ensure project success and because of this overall project costs are in fact lower. Furthermore, we have a very efficient, low cost operation at DNASTREAM and so have been able to keep our rates very competitive.

OS:  So 18 months down the line, has your approach been successful?

AM: Absolutely, we have had some fantastic customer successes across a number of sectors in many well known large organisations. I believe our message is gaining ground with more and more customers understanding that successful SAP projects need successful SAP consultants.

OS: Andy, thank you for your time and your candid answers. So what would be your final message to SAP customers?

AM: Quite simply, if you want to increase the chances of a successful SAP project and equally minimise project risk then you should look to supplement your project team with high quality, experienced SAP consultants in key roles who are completely focused on customer success. That is what DNASTREAM can do for you.

Focus on Programme Recoveries

With our focus on high quality, experienced consultants and delivering to customer requirements, DNASTREAM DNASTREAM Newsletter Summer 2008 - Debbie Turneris building a reputation for helping customers recover or re-energise existing SAP projects.

DNASTREAM Director and Programme Manager Debbie Turner explains, “Many customers have embarked on major, long term SAP projects with the objective of achieving a certain level of benefits and increased operational efficiencies as outlined in their original business case.

"However over time business requirements, objectives and project personnel may have changed and the project can reach a stage of ambiguity with no clear view on what constitutes success. This is a dangerous position to drift into as it can result in significant project cost and timescale over-runs.

"One particular issue we have encountered in many projects is the disconnect between the programme management and change management, which can lead to confusion, conflict and ultimately inefficiencies.  The answer to this is a much closer interaction between the two key programme areas under the management of a ‘hybrid’ programme and change manager, ensuring these are run together to the benefit of the overall programme.  DNASTREAM has experienced people who can successfully undertake this dual role.”

DNASTREAM is working with customers (and often existing partners) who are in this position, leveraging our extensive experience to help redefine the objectives, scope and resource requirements of the programme and ensure a successful conclusion.

We are delighted to be able to report that National Grid Metering has successfully gone live with the SAP Work and Asset Management solution, with programme management and industry experienced SAP implementation services provided by DNASTREAM.  This complex programme involved integrating with the existing IS-U and asset management solutions, to deliver improved working practices for the Industrial and Commercial Division.

SAP Q2 2008 Results

SAP posted solid second-quarter with a positive outlook for the remainder of the year and the shares rose to their highest point for seven months.

SAP’s CEO made the point that in the current economic downturn, SAP is less affected because the solutions are proven to help companies become more efficient and save costs which is now an even higher priority for many customers.

New DNASTREAM Offices

Due to continued growth DNASTREAM has moved into new larger offices within the Surrey Technology Centre in Guildford with stunning views across the Surrey landscape.

Legacy Conversion – but quicker with lower cost and risk

Did You Know?

You may not know but DNASTREAM, in partnership with Softwaremining, offer a unique software tool which converts legacy programs written in Cobol into modern, maintainable code such as Java or C#.

DNASTREAM Newsletter Summer 2008 - Softwaremining Partnership

There are many advantages to using this unique, automated conversion approach but the overwhelming key factor is significantly reduced risk and cost.   In a recent project, costs were one tenth and the project was completed twenty times faster than an equivalent manual rewrite.

The engine also has a business rules extraction facility allowing customers to interrogate legacy systems to better understand their functions and processes where current program documentation may not exist.

Although the tool has been used in a wide variety of technology projects it has also been found to be a great accelerator in SAP projects when interfacing SAP with legacy operational systems.

A customer from a recent successful project said,

“The translation of the COBOL code to JAVA was a tremendous success. Our experience of working with Softwaremining reconfirmed our view that reengineering enables a business to reap the benefits of modern technology without the significant risk and cost associated with wholesale replacement.”

If you would like to find out more about this unique tool and how it could help in your SAP or other technology modernisation projects, please contact us as info@dnastream.com.
